BOOK LAUNCH: Dyndaer by Joshua Robertson

Fans of the Kaelandur series, behold! Joshua Robertson is back with the second book and it promises to be a fast-paced sword and sorcery fantasy that picks up right where book one left off. Here are three excerpts to whet your appetite.

~~~
Excerpt 1
A woman, unlike any Branimir had ever seen, emerged from the crowd and occupied the remaining chair. The bow slung over her shoulder, and the quiver on her back were the last things Branimir noticed. She was shorter than most Anshedar with an oversized head, a scrawny neck, and a sickly, thin frame. Yet her skin, smooth and colored a reddish brown, darker than Branimir, caused him to lean toward her. A sash, red as blood, hung DyndaerCoveracross her shoulder, angled over her small chest.
She sat with her back stiffened and chin jutted forward. Pushing long black strands behind her ears, she introduced herself, “Hanna Bretka, daughter of Briv, from Danduher in Haemus Mons.” She sloshed her mug onto the table after taking a gulp.
“Branimir and Dorofej,” Bran said, “And, excuse my asking, but what are you?”
Her eyes swelled like an owl, a circular black center and the rest filled with a cerulean orb. The colored ring twinkled like the Ojenek in his pocket. “What do you mean what am I?”
Adamus and Dorofej merged in laughter.
“Kras,” she said, “I am a Lilitu. How would you not know my kind? The Kras frequent trade with the Lilitu in Halderon.”
Branimir rubbed the back of his neck with a crooked smile, and meekly shrugged. He could not take his eyes off of her.
What are you?” Adamus repeated, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye. “Best thing I have heard in two months. Having you travel with me never tires, Hanna.”
“Glad to please you, Adamus,” Hanna muttered, rolling his name off her tongue. “Is this why we detoured to Cavell? I thought we were aiming for debauchery, not expanding on our alleged friendship.”
Excerpt 2
“You told me that I would never find joy,” Branimir went on. “I can’t help but think the rune staves might be right, mainly when I think of these past several weeks.”
“Oh.” Dorofej shuffled out from the shadows, rejoining them near the fire. He appeared disgruntled, despite his words. “We have shared pleasant times together, yes? I say, do not sum up all arduous times to be grievous.”
“I was only telling you what I was seeing,” Drak explained. “I did not mean anything by it.”
“All the same, your words have stayed with me,” said Branimir, scooting over to make room for Dorofej.
“I say, Hanna did warn us that we may create our own future by thinking that we know what to expect, yes? Emotions can create your reality if you are not careful,” Dorofej softened his gaze.
Drak sniffed through his nose. “The rune staves tell what will happen. Branimir cannot change it, no matter how he feels about it.”
Dorofej furrowed his brow. “Know that for certain, we do not. Regardless, whether our paths are fixed or not, we choose how we walk them. Dangerous, it is, to find comfort in sadness. Leads only to more sadness, it does.”
“I like that thought,” Drak granted, and then grinned wide. “Feelings are unseen and untouched by anyone or anything. Fate cannot tell you how to feel.”
Branimir held his face, pondering the wisdom of the two. “Telling yourself how to feel seems easier to think about than to do.”
“Such is the task of the living, yes? I say, our minds are riddled with grand ideas and limited enthusiasm to see it done. Driven towards the things we wish to avoid, men are. Drink, does the drunkard; fight, does the warrior; and on and on, it goes.”
“Is it not what they want?” Branimir asked.
Dorofej lifted his eyebrows, “What do you want, Branimir?”
“I want…” Branimir may have never thought about the question before. He had always been entertained with trying to survive, the question of what to live for was beyond his knowing. Yet, upon taking a moment to think, the answer was not hard to come by. “I want happiness, Dorofej.”
Excerpt 3
The demons of the Netherworld chased him. Four-legged, wolf-like creatures, known as Dreka, rammed their goat horns at Branimir. The gray, wrinkled skin clung to their gaunt frames. Thin lips were stretched back giving sight to the rows of teeth on the tops and bottoms of their bloodied gums.
Branimir tumbled, swinging his weapon and feeling it tear through flesh as easily as a hot blade through frost. For a moment, he may have heard Dorofej’s riddlesome voice—no, his cry—but Branimir had not the time to listen. Bran had to scramble, and sneak, and stab.
And stab. And stab. And stab.
The urgency of the battle and the demons thumped inside of his head.
“Stop!” A familiar voice, again, cried in desperation.
Crimson splattered his vision as his dagger cut through skin once more. His blade loved the taste of blood; he felt the need to drench it again.
Pain stung his leg, but it was quickly forgotten as demon after demon lunged for him. The Dreka were ever persistent in their attack. He spun, and twisted, and disappeared to avoid every demonic beast soaring through the air, vicious teeth aimed for his throat. They would not reach him. For a moment, he thought he saw a flash of Hanna’s wide eyes, but they looked unfamiliar. Treacherous. Evil. Besides, his dagger was already cocked behind his ear and he felt incapable of restraining himself.
BLURB
Branimir emerges from the Netherworld as a living legend and learns the Ash Tree is still in danger from the cursed dagger, kaelandur. An old friend compels Branimir to finish what they started at Melkorka. Once again, the former slave must keep kaelandur out of uncertain hands, while struggling to separate heroes from villains and friends from foes. Some evils never lessen.
Rocky Rochford’s Don’t Say A Word is here!
Rocky Rochford’s Don’t Say A Word is here!
We’ve been waiting for it and finally Rocky Rochford has come out with the second part to his Don’t Turn Around trilogy. It’s even better than we’d hoped, and Rocky has been kind enough to share a gripping excerpt in his guest post below. Since it includes explicit and sometimes disturbing content, it’s whited out so that you can only read it by highlighting the clearly marked section. However, if you’d just like to learn about Rocky and his writing, you don’t have to worry about running into something scary; you won’t be able to see the excerpt without highlighting it.
Without further ado, here’s Rocky!
~~~

My name is Rocky Rochford and if you haven’t heard, I am quite crazy, highly excitable and energetic, which, for a writer, are pretty great qualities as it definitely keeps things fresh. When I’m not being crazy (i.e. normal) I’m scuba diving, sword collecting, or, well, rum swigging whilst occasionally writing, which brings us to today’s topic of conversation: my latest work to be released, Don’t Say A Word.

Available for purchase on Amazon as of today (July 1st) is my thrilling horror story that truly engrosses the reader in the story and serves as a great continuation to its predecessor Don’t Turn Around, which if you haven’t read it yet (seriously, you haven’t read it yet?), probably isn’t a bad thing. It would only have given you nightmares, made you flinch when hearing a footstep come from behind, and this one? Well it makes Don’t Turn Around read more like a glorified children’s book, because my killer is back and is taking his craft to new heights, with you in the passenger seat, and if that’s not enough to tempt you, then how about a peak at my boy in action:

Don’t Say A Word Extract:

*Please highlight the white area between the lines with your mouse to see the excerpt, which is explicit and at times disturbing.*

All I could hear was the manager spouting some bullshit. I was too busy enjoying the screams to pay notice, but I’m sure he noticed me making a beeline straight for him.

Talk shit, get hacked to shit.

Fair’s fair.

Three hacks, one result, head cleaved from bone and rolling around on the Persian rug, dyeing it red.

Now ain’t that going to be a bitch to clean?

Talk about murder.

Still plenty more people to kill, so no good getting sidetracked, and what’s this? They’re stuck in the dining room with me?

How can this be?

Oh yeah, I bribed someone to make sure the door was closed and locked after I entered. Rather easy really; all I had to do was break into his home, hold a knife against his two year old’s throat and take a selfie, one I showed him personally upon my arrival.

He was more than willing to comply.

Willing to do anything to keep his family safe.

Yeah, about that.

A happy family reunion not in the cards, not when I forced the mother to kill both herself and infant in the bathtub.

It was either that or I’d do it.

And trust me, my way is always worse.

But if mindless killing isn’t you’re thing, don’t worry, I also write romance, and my latest work is available now. Him & Her is the story of Donny Tyler and his feelings of love, longing and lust for the girl next door.

Both works in the Don’t Turn Around Trilogy are only available in ebook on both www.solsticepublishing.com and all Amazon domains, along with many of my other works, such as my Entwined Saga, a series of paranormal shorts; The Rise of The Elohim Chronicles, a fantasy adventure for everyone; and so many others. There is a Rochford work for one and all. Have a great day everyone!!!

Author Photo - Black & WhiteMy name is Rocky Rochford and I am a scuba diving, photo taking, adventure seeking, sword collecting writer and marine conservationist. I’m a handful of years into my twenties, but after living life on the road, going town to town before finally settling down, I’ve gained great insight into the world and her workings. From day one I have been a writer and a writer I shall forever remain.

I like to consider myself to be a student of everything and yet a master of nothing, who does not choose what he writes, but writes what chooses him, be it fantasy, crime, poetry, philosophy or even adventure. After all, life is a journey we all get to experience, just like a good book.

Every read of one of my typed works is another trip into the imagination of my mixed up, crazed and deranged mind. Welcome to the World of Rochford.

Author Chat: Marnie Cate

Have you ever thought of something fantastic that inspired you to write, whether it was a sentence or an image or even a general idea? Marnie Cate has, and she wrote and published her first book based on it. In fact, it’s the first book in a series. Get inspired by Marnie, who turned a thought into a whole book!

~~~
Is Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic your first book? How long did it take you to plan it before you began writing it?
Remember is my first book. It was really random how I started. Three years ago, these words came to mind: “A blinding light surged through me and I fell to my knees. Stumbling and confused, I found myself being led to safety by Gram. She told me to hide in a crevice in one of the old oak trees that had split.” I decided that day that I was going to write. I started writing without really knowing where I was going.
Do you plan your writing out with outlines, character development exercises, and other pre-writing activities? Or do you just write as it comes to you?
I just write as it comes to me. Typically, I will have an idea come to me that I want to include and it changes my original thought. In my second book, I have issues from the first book that need to be addressed. This has created a new way for me to think about writing but I am still finding that free writing leads to my best work.
Is this book part of a series? If so, when can we look forward to the next book being published?
This is planned to be a series. The second book, Exigency, has a solid start and the ideas that have come to me have confirmed that I do have more than one book inside me to be written.
Do you mostly write in this particular genre or do you dabble in other genres? If so, which ones?
I never really planned to write in any genre. I think my books will always have their “feet” planted in the world I know and wander into the world I dream.
What do you think makes your work stand apart from other works in your genre?
There are so many fantastic books in the fantasy genre. My thoughts on magic and its origin are different than anything I have read. The relationships that Mara has formed are the true story. I think relationships are universal but I would like to think that my characters are unique and ever changing.
Remember’s book blurb starts out with a quote from the main character’s remember by marnie cate book covergreat-grandmother that changes the MC’s life. Was this inspired by something that happened to you in real life? Or is it purely from your imagination?
“Hiding the truth from you is no longer protecting you. Sit and I will tell you what you need to know.” is spoken by Mara’s grandmother, Mae Veracor (Gram). Gram is the daughter of Genevieve Silver.
I can sadly say I was never told that my family were the protectors of magic. The reality of the story is that I do have a little sister that I adore and I was lucky to have the best grandmother in the world.
Tell us a little bit about the magic in your book, if it won’t spoil the plot. What is it like and how does it work? What’s original about it?
Without giving away too much, I can say that the magic in Remember is elemental magic. This encompasses the ability to call upon the elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth). Many books talk about the elements and their use. In my book, there are not just the elements but the elementals that teach Mara to use her gift.
You’re a fan of Dame Judi Dench, so much so that it’s on your Amazon author profile. What do you love so much about her? Have you based any of your characters on her in Remember?
The character of Mae Veracor is a combination of my grandmother, Judi Dench and my imagination. There is something that can’t be named when I watch movies, television shows or interviews of Dame Judi. She has a spirit for life that is contagious.
What inspires you to write? Music? Other books? Real life events? Just an incredible imagination?
I fear it is my imagination that keeps me writing.
Are you part of any writers’ groups? If so, what do you like about them? How do they help you or inspire you? If not, why not?
I have connected with several writers’ groups: #IndieBooksBeSeen and #Awethors. Both groups have very supportive authors who are about encouraging and helping each other. It is a great way to see that I am not alone on the island of indie authors.
Did you do any research for this book, even by reading other fantasy books?
The only research I did was to make sure that the ingredients in the spells in the book would not hurt anyone if they decided to try it. I would never recommend trying something you read in a book.
Do you read the kinds of books you like to write? Do you watch movies similar to or the same genre as your writing?
When I decided to write, my book reading dropped. I cannot narrow down just one genre of books that I like to read. One thing I did allow myself was to keep up with two series that I had stared before I decided to write. Each is very different from my book. As far as movies, I love all kinds but I do not think there is a movie out there quite like my book. I would love to see my book on the big screen one day.
If you could write anywhere in the world – in a fictional or nonfiction place – where would you write?
Either a flat in London close to the theatre or in a cabin in the woods with no distractions.
Awethors Event: Interview with Joe Compton
Our eleventh awesome author in the countdown until the Get Down With The Awethors Facebook event on April 12 is Joe Compton. He’s an indie author as well as president of his publishing company Never Mind The Fine Print LLC. Check out the story of how he came to start his own publishing company!
~~~

1. What will you be sharing with the group on April 12 at the Get Down With The Awethors event? Free book giveaway, sneak peek, merchandise, holding a competition, discussion?

My book, Amongst The Killing, will be part of one of the bundled giveaways. I believe it will be in the thriller category. I also have a chat room on my website that I will be opening up for everyone on the 12th.

2. What is your latest book or work, and where can we find it?

It’s called Amongst The Killing, a crime thriller available at Amazon.com on Kindle and inATK Final Final Cover paperback here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TYXGT36 and at Smashwords for all other ebook versions here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/521250.

3. What drives you to write? Music, an interest in the human mind, is it cathartic for you?

I am fascinated and curious about human nature and the human condition. I always had this wild imagination, so I took the discipline I was taught and put it use in writing. It’s one of the few things I like to do that doesn’t seem like work, though anyone who knows me knows I put a lot into everything I do.

4. What’s your favorite book in the world? One you couldn’t imagine having lived your life without reading.

Short stories of Edgar Allen Poe. I read them a very young age and said I want to write like that. Of course I discovered it’s a lot harder than it looks, but the spirit of the way he wrote is very much a kindred spirit for me.

5. When will you be at the Awethors event on April 12? All day or at a certain time?

I will be there as much as I can. I will have specific “hot times” to be in the chat room event I am planning, but for the most part I will be in and out at various times during the day.

Author Bio

Writing has always been a passion. Published in his school anthology at an early age, Joe was able to get his first taste of self-publishing, having gotten to see firsthand what it took to publish and sell something on your own.

Right out of school Joe joined the Marines, and while serving his country, Joe wrote the first draft of Amongst The Killing. When Joe got out he began pursuing his writing dream in Denver. He got an agent and they actually got an offer from a publishing company. Alas, though, they wanted to groom this manuscript toward a movie of the week theme and were looking to change the entire concept. Joe didn’t want to go along with those plans and walked away.

Soured from his experience, Joe began pursuing a different writing avenue through screenplays and filmmaking, and they were as equally strong of a passion as novel writing. While still in Denver, Joe began making short films. He made three of his own, and though success would elude him in the traditional sense, he found another type of success. The relationships he forged and the avenues he opened up led him to realize he was not alone in his experiences, and thus he decided to build a publishing brand. A company that could help others like him be discovered. It took some time, but now Never Mind The Fine Print Publishing LLC is here. Their first effort is Joe’s book he wrote all those many years ago, Amongst The Killing.

Awethors Event: Interview with Simon Coates

Our fifth awesome author in the countdown until the Get Down With The Awethors Facebook event on April 12 is Simon Coates. Simon turned his love for bike riding and competing into a book, Bike Racing into the Red. In fact, he’s competing today!

~~~
1. What will you be sharing with the group on April 12 at the Get Down With The Awethors event? Free book giveaway, sneak peek, merchandise, holding a competition, discussion?
Not sure yet – merchandise is a possibility. My cycling story was foreworded by Paul Curran, two-time 1986 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, and I should be able to get some signed items. At the very least, ebook versions of the published books I have.
2. What is your latest book or work, and where can we find it?
The book I have just published is The Discovery of Love, which is a love story (obviously!) but not your typical romance. Yes, there are two people in love, but the title is about the discovery of love; these people have obviously found it, so it is not really about them…
I had a book launch last weekend in Saltburn, North East England. At the moment my paperback books are only available in my local area. I will be looking into making my books available across a wider area; I published with a local publisher, so I don’t use Front coverCreateSpace, which of course makes distribution a bit more difficult. However, my books are all on Kindle, so they can be downloaded from there. You can get more details on my website http://www.galactic-echo.com.
3. What drives you to write? Music, an interest in the human mind, is it cathartic for you?
Well it was originally a hobby, but I have since decided to see if I can take it to the ultimate level. I have found that I love writing, and going to events I get to meet people, which is great. In just a couple of months I have met some really famous people and I just enjoy the whole writing thing, from thinking of ideas, to talking to people, and everything else, really!
Also getting feedback is great. One person who read my cycling story said he used it as inspiration to climb a mountain he was riding up, which was quite humbling, really (it wasn’t Olympus Mons by the way…).
4. What’s your favorite book in the world? One you couldn’t imagine having lived your life without reading.
Well funnily enough I don’t read much, believe it or not. I can’t think of any books that I could live without, to be honest! Other authors can’t believe I don’t read, but I personally don’t feel the need to. I don’t need to read others’ work to gain inspiration, and one’s own style is something you develop naturally, not by reading other people’s books.
5. When will you be at the Awethors event on April 12? All day or at a certain time?
Well I have a bike race on the same day, so it will probably be in the afternoon. I will actually be Bike Racing into the Red, then talking about the book of the same name!
~~~

Author Bio

I am Simon Coates, 41 years old, I live in Middlesbrough, North East England, UK. I have been writing for about seven years, around the general idea of what life might be like in the 24th century. My stories take a general concept and I then build a story around it. For example, with Bike Racing into the Red, it is around the idea that we live on planet Mars. Mars has the highest mountain in the universe, so it is inevitable that we would want to climb it to the top. A bike race is a logical extension to this. So I wrote a story about one!

When I am not writing, I am likely out on my bike; I compete in road time trial races, up to national championship level.

Awethors Event: Interview with James Quinn

Our second awesome author in the countdown until the Get Down With The Awethors Facebook event on April 12 is James Quinn. His giveaway is extra special because his book won’t be published officially on Amazon until May 2015, so you could get the chance to read it early!

~~~
1. What will you be sharing with the group on April 12 at the Get Down With The Awethors event? Free book giveaway, sneak peek, merchandise, holding a competition, discussion?
I’ll be offering a free copy of my new book A Game For Assassins as part of the giveaway bundle. I’ll also be making myself available throughout the day for people to ask questions about who I am (as a new author) and about the background to A Game For Assassins.
2. What is your latest book or work, and where can we find it?
A Game For Assassins is a Cold War thriller that introduces the character of Jack “Gorilla” Grant, a British intelligence officer. He’s a bit of a rough lad who doesn’t pull his punches. Hopefully the readers will take to him. The book is due for release at the beginning of May 2015, so this is a sneak peek opportunity for new readers.
Screen Shot 2015-04-01 at 11.41.21 PM
3. What drives you to write? Music, an interest in the human mind, is it cathartic for you?
I love the creative process, and it’s something I always wanted to do since I was a child when I won my first school writing competition. Unfortunately “real life” got in the way, and it’s only now that I’ve hit the dreaded 40 that I’m in a position to make it a reality.
4. What’s your favorite book in the world? One you couldn’t imagine having lived your life without reading.
There are so many, it would be a bit like choosing your favourite son or daughter! Impossible! But probably the biggest influence for me has been John le Carré. The first book of his that I read when I was a teenager was The Honourable Schoolboy, and it’s stayed with me ever since.
5. When will you be at the Awethors event on April 12? All day or at a certain time?
Hopefully I’ll be popping in and out all day (work permitting) but probably afternoon time is when I’ll be focused on the event!
Awethors Event: Interview with Lisa
Get excited – a brand new book event is coming to town, and you can access it right from your own computer! Get Down With The Awethors is a Facebook event that will take place on April 12 ALL DAY LONG. Whether you want to win giveaways, participate in discussions, or just meet some awesome indie authors, stop by – we’ve got 155 authors coming in and out of the event all day. What could be more exciting than that?
Speaking of great authors, Proof Positive snagged interviews with 12 of the participating authors, and we’ll be posting an interview every day until the event begins. The countdown starts with Lisa, author of poetry and fiction novels alike.
~~~

1. What will you be sharing with the group on April 12 at the Get Down With The Awethors event? Free book giveaway, sneak peek, merchandise, holding a competition, discussion?

I’ll be giving away a copy of my first novel, The Elemental, part I of The Fire Trilogy as well as my second poetry collection, When Words Start To Sing. People can also ask me questions on that day and I’ll try to answer them as honestly as possible. 😉

2. What is your latest book or work, and where can we find it?

My latest is the poetry collection When Words Start To Sing, and right now I’m working on The Empath, part II of The Fire Trilogy. You can find it on Amazon worldwide or ask for it in your local bookstore. They are available as both ebook and paperback.

3. What drives you to write? Music, an interest in the human mind, is it cathartic for you?

Funny you should ask, because it was indeed music. Placebo more specifically. Back in 2009, I saw them live at Pinkpop festival. When they were playing “Come Undone”, it was bookcovertwilight and we had a beautiful pink-purple sky. Brian, the singer, said the song had come to him in a dream and while he was singing, the outlines of The Elemental popped into my head. For a few minutes, I was in a different world. It wasn’t until much later I remembered that moment. One night when I went to bed, I dreamed about the book and when I woke up, I took it as a sign from the Universe to pursue a career in writing. I listened to nothing else but Battle for the Sun, the Placebo album they had just released at that time, driving everybody crazy. So you could argue it really became the soundtrack to my book. And they’re still very important to my writing. I consider Brian my muse, so let’s hope they go on for many more years. 😉

Also, I write paranormal fiction. I believe there is more between Heaven and Earth. I wanted to show people that being “gifted” doesn’t make you scary or different or abnormal. Yes, it can be dangerous and a burden and all that, but it’s also just another skill. Like some people are really good musicians or carpenters or doctors. My characters are living normal lives, they could be friends of yours. The normality of the paranormal is important to me.

4. What’s your favorite book in the world? One you couldn’t imagine having lived your life without reading.

Oh, terrible question! Just one… Arrggh! Well, if it’s just one book, I guess it would have to be Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. There’s so much in it. I’ve read it hundreds of times and I still discover new things or new emotions when I read it. I mean, Tolkien and more recently JK Rowling certainly changed my life, but Jane Austen is responsible for the hopeful romantic I am today. Yes, hopeful, not hopeless. I believe everybody will find the love they need. It’s finding out what you need that’s the hard part. I feel very blessed in love through life.

5. When will you be at the Awethors event on April 12? All day or at a certain time?

Pretty much all day, assisting DM Cain (author of The Phoenix Project and Chronicles of Chaos), answering people’s questions and making sure nobody gets left out.

She grew up in a small town in the Netherlands where her parents always taught her to think outside the box. She has a degree in social studies and joined the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids as an adult.

Lisa loves London, according to her “the city where magic dwells,” and can often be found there. She still resides in the Netherlands, however, with her partner and their dog, Miss Ginger Rogers, and if you’re lucky, you may find her in her favourite coffeehouse, Barista cafe.

Lisa is also a freelance copywriter for CAPSLOC, a music venue in The Netherlands, an editor for Folk Harp Folks, a magazine published by The Dutch Folk Harp society, and she writes a weekly column for her local newspaper.
